MEDITERRANEAN AWARDS

In 1996, the Fondazione Mediterraneo instituted the Mediterranean Awards (with various categories) that are granted every year to eminent personalities from the worlds of arts and culture, politics and science and social disciplines, whose actions have contributed to reducing tensions, breaking down cultural barriers and developing shared values in the Greater Mediterranean.

This Award is considered one of the most prestigious acknowledgements in the world.

Various events are associated with the Mediterranean Award, such as the “Euro-Mediterranean Concert for Dialogue Among Cultures” and the “Epiphany Concert” (organized by the Cultural Centre “Oltre il Chiostro” in collaboration with the Fondazione Mediterraneo. The latter event is broadcast by RaiUno and Rai International throughout the world every year on the morning of January 6th).

 

 

The President of the Fondazione Mediterraneo Michele Capasso has delivered the Mediterranean Award for Institutions Mustapha Ben Jaafar 2014, President of the National Constituent Assembly of Tunisia,'' for his contribution - it is written in the grounds - the birth of the Constituent Assembly of Tunisia and the new Constitution, which enshrines social justice and civil liberties and individual as well indissoluble of the nascent Tunisian democracy".

In his speech, the Ambassador of Tunisia in this Italian Naceur Mestiri, President Ben Jaafar said:

"I receive this prestigious award, consisting of the "Totem of Peace" by the great sculptor Mario Molinari, on behalf of all the people and the elected Tunisian Constituent National Assembly. Tunisia, thanks to its revolution and the sacrifices of young people marked a historic turning point for the construction of a free and democratic society which will be an essential element for the consolidation of peace in the Mediterranean."

Before the ceremony of award of the Mediterranean, President Ben Jaafar and the Tunisian delegation were received at the Quirinale Palace by the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano.

President Ben Jaafar also intervened at the Congress of European Socialists to bring the Tunisian example, cornerstone of the new Europe for the Mediterranean.

In the course of two meetings (Naples, November 9th, 2013 and Vilnius, November 24th, 2013), members of the jury of the Fondazione Mediterraneo and the members of the jury of Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for Dialogue between Cultures, have attributed the Mediterranean awards 2013-2014. The announcement was made by the President of Fondazione Mediterraneo Michele Capasso.
