MEDITERRANEAN AWARD FOR SCIENCE AND RESEARCH The power of dialogue among different cultures and various sciences forges the protagonists of history. With this award we thank Ruggero Maria Santilli, samnite by origin, Italian‑American by education, flatly Mediterranean by soul, for his theoretic contribution to the new sciences and for his work through mathematics, physics and chemistry leading to the extraordinary postulates for the development of new technologies that allow an useful and sustainable development. MEDITERRANEAN AWARD FOR CULTURE She is the founder of the Circúlo Mediterraneo and this award wants to pay tribute to her actions in promoting integration among politics, culture and civil society in the Mediterranean area. MEDITERRANEAN AWARD FOR SOCIAL SOLIDARITY Fondazione Mediterraneo assigned the Mediterranean Award for Social Solidarity 2009 to the Neapolitan association L’Altra Napoli Onlus for its stimulating role in the civil progress of the Neapolitan society, looking at the areas of social unease trying to overcome the dependency culture, promoting concrete models of solution and government in those areas. MEDITERRANEAN AWARD FOR ART AND CREATIVITY Pino Cacozza has given expression to the collective consciousness of the Arbëreshe people. In his wide production of poems and songs he brings back to mind the latent memories of a community which is socially and politically melted into the Italian nation but is still preserving its historical and linguistic tradition. He prefers squares rather than theatres and in his performances he uses verses and music to exalt a whole people, renewing its roots, reinforcing its feeling of unity and swaying the audience in a choral brotherly dance at the end of the show. MEDITERRANEAN AWARD FOR PEACE Commonly considered as “the Poet of Peace”, “the Poet of the Palestinian cause” or of the Palestinian Resistance, Mahmoud Darwich avoided the slenderness of the thematic field offered by resistance poetry, transforming little by little the familiar objects of his lost land into myths, treating Palestine like a metaphor of the human condition. His poetry, already mightily lyrical, lives on an epic inspiration, dispensed essentially through a bright evocation of figures of speech or mythical figures drawn from all cultures. The clever work on the images and the incisive wording, allow Mahmoud Darwich to give back to himself and to Palestine the identity stolen with the promise of peace. His poetry develops, above all, a profound and painful thought on memory, on exile in all its dimensions, and digs deeply in the heart of rejection, of otherness and of death. Substitute of the confiscated native land, the writing is claimed as a principle of existence and even more as “out-life”. Poetry at this stage acquires completely his sense of dwell (bayt). MEDITERRANEAN AWARD FOR CULTURE In the city of Gaza, caught in the grip of an inexorable paralysis, living in poverty with little livelihood, among endless problems, young people don’t give way to despondency and desolation but look for everything that may enlighten and feed their mind. They are self-educated, they exchange information and educational tools and transcribe any uplifting or useful reading accessible to one of them, supporting each other spurred by that human ambition described as “seguir virtute e canoscenza” in Dante’s words. This prize aims to remember them to the world that has left them alone, even ignoring the UN declarations, and hides this action of abandon behind the ambiguous language highlighted by Joris Luyendijk in “Almost human. MEDITERRANEAN AWARD "MEDAL OF HONOUR" The Inauguration and Launching Ceremony of the boat Megaride – Grande Mediterraneo, donated to the Fondazione Mediterraneo by Fausto and Marion Marchi, took place within the Yacht Med Festival event. As a mark of gratitude they received the Medal of Honour of the Mediterranean Award. The Boat represents Mediterranean Countries and has been recognized not only by the countries overlooking the Basin but also by International Institutions such as the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly and the United Nations. The Boat, restored by Consormare del Golfo represents Mediterranean Countries and has been recognized by International Institutions. The initiative was realized thanks to the sensibility of the President Vincenzo Zottola. For this reason the Fondazione Mediterraneo attributed to Vincenzo Zottola the Medal of Honour 2009. MEDITERRANEAN AWARD "SILVER DOLPHIN" History has known more than one person who, though without media renown, have played an extraordinary role in the events that mark the life of a State. Ahmed Jebli belongs to this gallery, for the contribution given to the promotion of knowledge and culture, especially in the academic field. The themes he envisaged have a high vision of education, always overcoming the borders of class and belonging. Ahmed Jebli‘s action falls within this framework, always aiming at understanding the reasons “of the other” and at developing friendship among the peoples of the Mediterranean.
