Mediterranean Awards

In 1996, the Fondazione Mediterraneo instituted the Mediterranean Awards (with various categories) that are granted every year to eminent personalities from the worlds of arts and culture, politics and science and social disciplines, whose actions have contributed to reducing tensions, breaking down cultural barriers and developing shared values in the Greater Mediterranean.

This Award is considered one of the most prestigious acknowledgements in the world.

Various events are associated with the Mediterranean Award, such as the “Euro-Mediterranean Concert for Dialogue Among Cultures” and the “Epiphany Concert” (organized by the Cultural Centre “Oltre il Chiostro” in collaboration with the Fondazione Mediterraneo. The latter event is broadcast by RaiUno and Rai International throughout the world every year on the morning of January 6th).

On June 4th 2003 was held, at Maison de la Méditerranée, the ceremony for the Mediterranean Award "Silver Dolphin 2003” to the memory of Izet Sarajlic'.

Raffaele La Capria started his long itinerary as a novelist in the 50s, in a century characterized by poor reason and great ferocity. His work can be divided into three periods, reaching its end, but not its aim, during the 70s. An aim which is also suggested by his paper flowers opening to the reader’s eyes just as the Japanese paper flowers open to water. This “tryptic” of novels matches with an ideal “tryptic” of essays and reflections which illuminate the characters, the author, a whole generation and the mythical city where the Mediterranean brightness was switched off by another tragedy. La Capria’s work, a long meditation on the opportunity lost by the individual and by history, is a symbol of the Mediterranean which, from one failure to another, tragically builds its own present.
And this is the reason why the Prize Silver Dolphin 2003 is awarded to him, Mediterranean conscience and Mediterranean writer.

This event can be considered – due to geographic position, choice and vocation – as an observatory of European changes; and its usual research on the cinema of the centre-eastern area is now accompanied by a research on an “elsewhere” other than what had been considered “elsewhere” by Europe until some years ago, after the second world war.
