THE FONDAZIONE MEDITERRANEO AND THE ANNA LINDH ITALIA FEDERATION PARTICIPATE IN THE SIXTH EDITION OF "ROME MED - MEDITERRANEAN DIALOGUES"

The Fondazione Mediterraneo and the Anna Lindh Italia Federation participated - with their own representatives - in the sixth edition of "ROME MED - MEDITERRANEAN DIALOGUES": the annual high-level initiative promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and by ISPI ( Italian Institute of International Political Studies) with the aim of rethinking traditional approaches to the territory by integrating the analysis of current challenges with new ideas and suggestions and to draw up a new “positive agenda”, addressing shared challenges both at regional and international level.
This year's edition was essentially dedicated to the effects of the pandemic on the Mediterranean region.
Launched in 2015, MED has quickly become the global hub for high-level dialogues on the broader Mediterranean, involving prominent leaders from Mediterranean governments, business, civil society, media and academia. Past editions have brought together more than 1,000 international leaders, including Heads of State and Ministers (among them, the King of Jordan, the Iraqi and Lebanese President, the Foreign Ministers of Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates United States, United States Secretary of State, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Envoy for Syria, as well as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and First Vice-President of the Commission and many others).

The Italian Institute of International Political Studies (ISPI) is an independent, non-partisan think tank that provides cutting-edge research and workable policy options to government officials, business executives, and the general public who want to better understand international issues. Founded in 1934 in Milan, ISPI has always adopted a pragmatic approach in the analysis of geographical areas and topics of particular interest for Italy and Europe. ISPI is the only Italian Institute - and among the few in Europe - that combines policy-oriented research with an equally significant commitment to education and training, conferences and advice on international trends.
In particular, the Institute is the main Italian forum for debate on international affairs and promotes international events including annual conferences (such as Rome MED), bilateral dialogue forums with France, Germany, Switzerland and Russia and closed-door meetings for an audience selected. In 80 years ISPI has built a vast network of think tanks in Europe and around the world and since 2014 it has been the think tank that represents Italy in the Think20 (T20), an advisory body of the G20.

The four pillars
Rome MED is based on four pillars: shared prosperity, shared security, migration and civil society and culture. Debates on these issues aim to complement analyzes of current challenges with new ideas and suggestions to increase economic cooperation, overcome regional rivalries and conflicts and ensure that adequate incentives for sustainable development are set in motion

THE FONDAZIONE MEDITERRANEO CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF THE BARCELONA PROCESS

The Fondazione Mediterraneo, established in 1990 to promote dialogue and cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean area, was the protagonist of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, when few spoke or were interested in the issue.
In particular, he participated and organized the Barcelona 1995 events (Ministerial Conference and Euromed Civil Forum) which launched the Euro-Mediterranean partnership under the name of the “Barcelona Process”.
The Barcelona Process, also known as the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, is precisely the name used to indicate the common European strategy for the Mediterranean region. This process was initiated by the European Union, which at the time had 15 member states, and by 12 other states in the region during the Barcelona conference which met on 27 November and 28 November 1995 at the Hotel Juan Carlos I. The United States attended the conference as observers. Subsequently, after the enlargement of the European Union in 2004, Malta and Cyprus which participated in the process as third countries, became part of the process as members of the European Union.
The milestones of an initiative that is still indispensable for peace and shared development in the region were recalled at the Fondazione Mediterraneo offices in Naples, Amman and Marrakech - linked webinars with Barcelona

With many webinar links women representing various fields - politics, culture, religion, volunteering, education, science, etc. - members of the KIMIYYA program of the Fondazione Mediterraneo celebrated the "World Day against violence against women" at the Museum of Peace - MAMT. The women members of the “Anna Lindh Italia Federation” participated.
It was the UN assembly in 1999 that chose this date in memory of the sacrifice of the sisters Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal, killed by agents of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. But what is the story of the Mirabal sisters? To find out, we need to go back to 1960. On November 25 of that year, in fact, three sisters were killed by agents of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic.
After being stopped in the street on their way to prison to visit their husbands, they were beaten with sticks and thrown into a ravine by their executioners, who tried to put the brutal violence through an accident. It was immediately clear to public opinion that the three women had been murdered. Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal - these are their names - were, in fact, known as activists of the clandestine group Movimento 14 giugno, disliked by the government. Because of their militancy, in January 1960, they were also arrested and jailed for a few months, as the page dedicated to their history published in the Encyclopedia of Women recalls

“ALL UNITED WE WILL SING”. THE FONDAZIONE MEDITERRANEO CELEBRATES THE FORTY YEAR OF THE IRPINIA EARTHQUAKE

La Fondazione Mediterraneo - with webinar, skype and videoconferencing links - wanted to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Irpinia earthquake which left an indelible mark on the development of Southern Italy and, in particular, of the internal areas.
The Museum of Peace - MAMT made available videos, documentaries and testimonies that accompanied the key moments of the event.
President Michele Capasso duly recalled that day and the tragedy he saw with his own eyes in the following days, when he visited the completely destroyed villages accompanied by fellow architects from the area. And then the solidarity actions, the hospitality in San Sebastiano al Vesuvio of the inhabitants of Conza della Campania and other countries, with a bond that lasts indissoluble over time.
"In this moment of great planetary emergency - said President Capasso - I remember two lessons in similar tragedies: the eruption of Vesuvius in 1944 and the earthquake in Irpinia in 1980. The keystone of the rebirth was not politics, even then steeped in sloppiness, inefficiency and often corruption, but the redemption of people forced to UNITE to ACT TOGETHER: “ALL UNITED WE WILL SING”, my grandfather and father said to the inhabitants of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio entirely destroyed by the lava of 1944; "PRESIDENT PERTINI, GIVE US A MESSAGE OF HOPE TO ACT ALL TOGETHER WITH GENROUS IN SOLIDARITY", said the inhabitants of the Irpinia towns - while they mourned their dead - to our beloved President of the Republic.
Here is the keystone: in tragedies we must take advantage of a feeling of unity and rare generosity in solidarity which on other occasions does not exist and which constitutes the turning point for reconstruction. The other element is SPEED: "FATEPRESTO" was the title of "IL MATTINO" the day after the earthquake. "DO IT HAPPY AND WELL" is the appeal I make to today's politicians, eliminating all divisions and particular interests and winning, for once, competence, passion and honesty. On this we will be judged !.

THE PASSAGE OF THE CROSS FROM PANAMA TO LISBON FOR GMG 2023

Pope Francis celebrated Holy Mass in St. Peter's Basilica on the occasion of the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. At the end of the celebration there was the passage of the symbols of the World Youth Days, the Cross and the copy of the Salus Populi Romani Icon, from the representation of Panamanian youth to Portuguese youth, for Gmg 2023 to be held in Lisbon: initially scheduled for 2022 and postponed for the pandemic.
"For years - explains the dicastery for the laity, family and life - the Cross and the Salus Populi Romani Icon have accompanied the preparations for the international editions of the Gmg: the delivery of symbols to the young people of the diocese that hosts the Day always took place at the end of the celebration of Palm Sunday presided over by the Holy Father in St. Peter's Square. This tradition dates back to 1984 when, at the end of the Jubilee Year of the Redemption, Pope John Paul II entrusted young people with the Jubilee Cross, known today as the Cross of the Gmg, since then at the center of every international edition of the Days.
In 2003 the Holy Father also offered young people a copy of the Icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani, which supports the Cross in its pilgrimages around the world ". The Mediterranean Foundation and the Anna Lindh Italy Federation support
Gmg 2023.

It was an honor for the Fondazione Mediterraneo and for the Anna LIndh Italy Federation (which groups more than a thousand organizations engaged in dialogue and solidarity) to participate in "The Economy of Francesco": the meeting with young economists wanted by the Holy Father, which took place from 19 to 21 November 2020.
Given the health emergency in the world caused by Covid-19, the organizing committee has decided to celebrate the international event entirely online, with live and streaming links with all members and speakers.
Pope Francis has sent an important video message.
The president of the Michele Capasso Foundation underlined the importance of the initiative and the confirmation of two concepts on which the Fondazione Mediterraneo was born thirty years ago, in 1990: "transforming Love for power into the Power of Love and acting with generosity through solidarity".
The next meeting, in person, will always be held in Assisi and is scheduled for autumn 2021, when health conditions will allow everyone to participate.
The organization of the The Economy of Francesco 2020 event in the online version allowed all young people registered to participate in the meeting in the same conditions, to share the lived experience, work, proposals, and reflections gained in recent months in the 12 villages.
The Committee is working to create an innovative, participatory and global follow-up that preserves the peculiar elements of "The Economy of Francesco" (group work, plenary and parallel sessions with keynote speakers, Franciscan spirituality, artistic performances, exhibitions) enriching it with the opportunities and languages that the digital event offers.
"The Economy of Francesco" is a movement of young people with faces, personalities, ideas that moves and lives all over the world for a more just, inclusive and sustainable economy and to give a soul to the economy of tomorrow. The world needs the creativity and love of the participants who, as artisans and producers of the future, are weaving the Economy of Francis.
In the video message, the Pope stressed that the "Economy of Francis" meeting is not a point of arrival "but the initial thrust of a process" that we are invited to live "as a vocation, as a culture and as a pact".
