In 1996 the Fondazione Mediterraneo founded the Mediterranean Award (with its various sections) which is granted yearly to personalities of political, cultural, scientific, social and artistic world who contributed by their action to reduce tensions and start an upgrading process of cultural differences and shared values in the area of the Greater Mediterranean.

The book traces the history of the Mediterranean Award from 1996 until today through dedicated pages to single prizewinners with reasons and pictures.

The Councillor of the Prime Minister of Morocco Driss Guerraui and the Ambassador of the Palestinian Authority to the European Union Leila Shahid went to make tribute to the Totem for Peace in San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, realized to honour the Mayor Raffaele Capasso. For the occasion there was the symbolic "passing of the baton" from San Sebastiano al Vesuvio to Rabat and Gaza where other Totems for Peace will be realized soon.

On the occasion of the Awarding Ceremony for the Mediterranean Awards 2011, it took place, in the prestigious seat of Fondazione Mediterraneo in the heart of the city of Naples, the Round Table for Peace to discuss about matters related to the recent events in the Mediterranean.
