The “Nunziatella” Military School is awarded the 2012 Mediterranean Award

The International jury of the Fondazione Mediterraneo – made up of representatives from 43 countries – has awarded the “2012 Mediterranean Award for Institutions” to the “Nunziatella” Military School in Naples.
The announcement of this acknowledgment - considered as one of the most prestigious prizes throughout the world - was made by the president of the Fondazione Mediterraneo, Prof. Michele Capasso, on 19 November 2011, at a ceremony to celebrate 224 years since the foundation of the Military School.
“It is a special award - stated Capasso – a tribute to Italy and to one of its most prestigious institutions: the “Nunziatella” Military School, founded in 1787 as a Royal Military Academy, which is part of the world’s heritage for the values it disseminates and for the high level of education it gives to young people who will become the “architects” of our future”.
During our interview with the Commander of the School, Colonel Bernardo Barbarotto, the ex-presidents of the National Association of the Former Pupils of “Nunziatella”, Giuseppe Catenacci and Alessandro Ortis, Engineer, and the President of the “Nunziatella” Charity Foundation, Prof. Antonio Perna, the question of how to make this award was discussed. During the meeting, Prof. Capasso confirmed that the Fondazione Mediterraneo supported the inclusion of the “Nunziatella” Military School in the UNESCO list of Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and would award the monumental work entitled, “Peace Totem”, by the sculptor Molinari, to the School on the occasion of its 225th anniversary.

The Fondazione Mediterraneo will take part in the States General of Culture. Looking towards its appointment at the States General of Culture, scheduled for Rome on 3-4 December, the Democratic Party of Turin, in collaboration with the DP Group for the City and Province, is rallying forces to promote an important occasion on which to compare and exchange experiences with the vast and multifarious world of culture offered in Turin. The assembly is proposing to capitalize on the experiences and opportunities from the diversified cultural horizon of the City of Turin and Municipalities of its Province to keep culture alive in times of cuts and crisis by bringing together numerous people from the whole territory: directors, representatives of associations and foundations, and people working in the sector. Moreover, this meeting in Turin represents an opportunity to consolidate a new alliance bringing together the driving forces of society, forming a pact capable of offering prospects and injecting impetus into the many forms of energy that have lent expression to such a great season. This has increased the appeal of our territory and given it a new identity. The States General of Culture meeting in Turin on 19 November can be seen as a genuine incubator for ideas and a stimulus towards the construction of a model for alternative development. Hence culture will be a catalyst for development and employment, laying down the cardinal points for a Government proposal allowing the Country to hoist itself out of the economic and moral decline into which it has sunk. |
PAM Conference in Naples: “Mediterranean energy: an urgent need”

| The Fondazione Mediterraneo, first observer of PAM, has taken part in the workshop and in the press conference in the person of the president Mc. In this occasion the Fm has underlined the importance of dialogue with reference to energetic choices: rules, technical rules and financial aspects. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean is organizing, within the framework of the PAM Panel on External Trade and Investments in the Mediterranean (PAM 2nd Standing Committee for Economic, Social and Environmental issues), a high-profile conference on “Mediterranean Energy: an urgent need”, to be held in Naples, Italy, on 17 November 2011. The event is part of the PAM Panel’s programme of activities with the aim to support the creation of a Mediterranean energy Community. PAM will convene the main stakeholders in the infrastructure development for the electricity and gas sectors, inter alia, parliamentarians, representatives of regulators, transmission systems operators, international financial operators and Banks. The event, presided by Pam Vice-President, Senator Francesco Amoruso (Italy) and the co-chairs of the PAM Panel, Hon. Mohammad Zureiqat (Jordan) and Mrs. Teresa Ribeiro (Portugal), is led by Eng. Alessandro Ortis, Coordinator of the Energy Sectoral Group within the PAM Panel. The Conference will take place under the auspices of the Association of Mediterranean Regulators for Electricity and Gas (MEDREG), Observer to PAM and major PAM’s partner in the energy sector, and is sponsored by TERNA S.p.A. (the Italian owner and operator of the National Electricity Transmission Grid). |

Pam Prize 2011 Awardee nominated Italian Foreign Affairs Minister

| On the occasion of the high profile conference on energy issues being held today in Naples, Italy, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, expressed its congratulations to Hon. Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata, on his appointment to Foreign Affairs Minister in the new Italian Government. Sen. Francesco Maria Amoruso, PAM Vice President, and Dr. Sergio Piazzi, PAM Secretary General, took the opportunity to recall that just a few weeks ago, during the VI Plenary Session of PAM held in Palermo, Italy, Hon. Terzi di Sant’Agata, in his capacity as Ambassador of Italy, was awarded the PAM Prize 2011 – together with prof. Michele Capasso, president of Fondazione Mediterraneo - in appreciation of his personal support to the PAM High level delegation during the visit to the US Senate, Congress and Administration in September of this year. He had also been instrumental in facilitating the visit of another PAM mission in New York last year. “We are convinced that Minister Terzi di Sant’Agata will dedicate the necessary attention to the most urgent issues concerning the Mediterranean and its current political, economic, social and cultural developments, in order to provide those strategic actions aimed at guaranteeing greater stability and a sustainable path of general growth in the region.” Sen. Round Table: “The Maritime Economy: Lazio and Campania Regions leading the Mediterranean”

| Following the official signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, “Regio Prima Latium et Campania”, for the development of the Maritime Economy, which took place in Naples at the Navigare Boat Show on 28th October this year, the Caserta, Latina, Naples, Rome and Salerno Chambers of Commerce met in Rome to present the contents of their agreement, and to share their thoughts on the next operative steps to be taken to move forward together. Accordingly, a Round Table was organized at the Hall of the Council of the Rome Chamber of Commerce on 16th November, entitled: “the Maritime Economy: Lazio and Campania Regions leading the Mediterranean. Michele Capasso, President of the Fondazione Mediterraneo, participating at this event, reminded the participants that this initiative had been suggested by the Fondazione and President of the Latina Chamber of Commerce (CCIIA), Mr Zottola, four years earlier. Other supporters included the Viterbo Chamber of Commerce, which officialised its formal adhesion to the agreement. The Councillor for Employment and Training for the Lazio Region, Ms. Mariella Zezza, inaugurated the day’s work, stating: “We are committed to sustaining vocational training in maritime industries that will lead to specialised professional profiles and generate new employment. On Saturday morning I will be in Gaeta to inaugurate the first courses of its kind to be held at an Italian Technical College, the G. Caboto Nautical Institute. The courses will train new shipboard officers, deck officers and port directors”. The Councillor concluded that, “from today we will consolidate our collaboration into an inter-regional agreement to create an surge of employment.” Vincenzo Zottola, Latina Chamber of Commerce, declared that “the Round Table was an opportunity to launch a joint collaboration programme to give immediate effect to the memorandum of understanding. Two working groups will be formed, a political/strategic one formed by presidents of the Chambers of Commerce, and the other technical/scientific composed of national level experts coordinated by their respective secretaries general. Mr. Zottola concluded that “we need to remember that together the two regions represent one fifth of the services produced by the entire Country. With 830 kilometres of coast representing 11% of the Italian coastline and one of the most interesting insular systems of the world, and certainly in the Mediterranean, in relation to which both regions can boast impressive statistics. Among them, mention need only be made the 16.5% of shipbuilders’ yards, 6.5% of fishing, 18.7% of maritime transport and approximately 14 million passengers, 10% of commercial ports capable of moving 44 million tonnes of goods and 2.2 million passengers from the cruise liners market”. |  |

| The President of the Fondazione Mediterraneo, Michele Capasso, spoke at the Rome Chamber of Commerce on the occasion of the presentation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Chambers of Commerce of Latina, Rome, Caserta, Naples and Salerno attended by their Presidents Zottola, Cremonesi, De Simone, Maddaloni, Arzano and Palombelli, respectively. President Zottola, proponent of the memorandum, highlighted how the “joint project, inspired by the Fondazione Mediterraneo and the Latina Chamber of Commerce, to unite the Lazio and Campania regions through an important project for the maritime economy, had been implemented”. |

Meeting of the Regional Coordinators of the Italian Network

| The Meeting of the Regional Coordinators of the Italian Network of the Anna Lindh Foundation took place in Rome. Its aim was to relaunch the Italian Network as a result of the conclusions of the guidelines issued by the 10th Meeting of the Heads of National Networks, which took place in Krakow from 20-23rd October 2011. The participants unanimously adopted a new system of Governance for the Italian Network, introducing a Steering Committee that comprises seven members with decision-making powers, to work alongside the National Head. It was also decided to transform the Regional Committees into “Regional Antennas” |

MeYouMe 2011 – Mediterranean Youth Meeting

The 2011 edition of MeYouMe took place in Cosenza bringing together 200 youths from 18 different Countries. On this occasion, the MANY Network was launched – “Mediterranean Autonomous Network for Youth”.
The Fondazione Mediterraneo has supported this initiative through its programme of activities at the Mediterranean youth centre. MeYouMe is all about meeting – an adventure on a return voyage – between an I and a YOU, between ME and YOU!
It is where the green of the earth meets the blue of the sea. |

Mediterranean Parliaments award a prize to the Fondazione Mediterraneo

At the Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), convening at the seat of the Regional Assembly of Sicily in the historical Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo, the outgoing PAM President, Abdelwahed Radi, awarded the PAM Prize to the Fondazione Mediterraneo. President Radi was recently elected as the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the international organization that unites parliaments from all over the world. The inscription reads, “On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Fondazione Mediterraneo, for its commitment to promoting intercultural dialogue throughout the Mediterranean and for its support towards the establishment and activities of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean”. President Radi made the following remarks: “This [prize] is made in recognition of Michele Capasso’s having dedicated his life to building prosperity and democracy in the Mediterranean basis. He is a true soldier working relentlessly to achieve the goal of bringing peoples, civilizations and cultures closer together. This prize is only a small token compared to the enormous contribution made by Michele and he deserves much greater recognition for the quality and quantity of his action. It is therefore our wish that such recognition will soon be forthcoming”. Congratulations were also received from delegations of various countries, including from Michel Vauzelle, President of the PACA Region and the Jordanian President of PAM, Fayez Tarawneh. |

President of Region PACA – Provence, Alpes Marittimes et Cote d’Azur – Michel Vauzelle expressed his appreciation for the twenty years anniversary of Fondazione Mediterraneo. “I’ve been knowing Michele Capasso for 20 years and together have been shared the same efforts for dialogue and peace in Mediterranean. First as Foreign Affairs Ministry and later as parliamentar, and as last, as President of a region deeply Mediterranean, I hope that the amazing work done by Michele Capasso and by Fondazione Mediterraneo can found the owed award. In this crucial moment for the Mediterranean, person as Michele Capasso, are worthy for the establishment of peace and shared development.” |
