THE MAISON DE LA PAIX

CASA UNIVERSALE DELLE CULTURE

The Maison de la Paix - Casa Universale delle Culture is a place strongly representative, in which will convey the knowledge of the different identities and cultures, structuring permanently initiatives aimed at the spreading of peace, necessary for the shared development.

The Maison de la Paix - Casa Universale delle Culture (MdP) is a project conceived by Michele Capasso, approved by many Countries and international organizations. It is an architecture that keeps the memory of many Peace activities which created history, often more than the wars, but it is – above all – a space "to build” Peace.

The architectonical complex has an important symbolic worth: it represents the Countries of the World engaged in the Peace process and the Countries victim of the conflicts.

Proposed by the Fondazione Mediterraneo with the Maison des Alliances – together with the main adherent organizations, such as the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly, the League of Arab States, the "Anna Lindh" Euro-Mediterranean Foundation and others, the MdP represents a referent point for all the ones who dedicate their lives to peace.

The symbol of the MdP is the "Totem for Peace", an artwork by the Italian sculptor Mario Molinari which the Fondazione Mediterraneo is promoting all around the world, creating the network of the "Cities for Peace".

The first seat of the MdP was inaugurated on the 14th of June 2010 (Maison de la Paix - Casa Universale delle Culture) in the historical building of the Grand Hotel de Londres in Naples.

The action of the Maison de la Paix - Casa Universale delle Culture aims at improving the main activities of the "Universal Forum of Cultures" in: Barcelona (2004), Monterrey (2007), Valparaiso (2010) and Naples (2013).

The Maison de la Paix performs most of the initiatives jointly with the Maison de la Méditerranée.

The summit of the Southern European countries (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Malta) was held in Rome, in Villa Madama.
"If I had to summarize the spirit that unites us is that we are decidedly pro-European countries", this summit "is not characterized by separating ourselves from the rest of Europe but by discussing, reasoning and making proposals for the benefit of the EU because we believe in the future of the EU". Premier Paolo Gentiloni said this at the summit of Villa Madama among the seven Mediterranean countries of the EU. "Europe's demand for Europe at global level and the positive moment for all European economies is the right time to make an effort for greater European cohesion", said the President of the Council, underliningthat the Med-7 meeting "wants to reduce the differences between North and South Europe, between East and West": "the time to do so is now when the economic situation allows investment in the future"."After a decade of economic crisis, Europe has started to grow again, during the difficulties it has developed new tools for governance and strengthened its capacity to react to global challenges". This is stated in the final document of the summit of the countries of Southern Europe, according to which now "Europe is stronger, but much remains to be done".
"The management of migration flows will be a key challenge for the EU in the coming years. Southern European countries are particularly worried and affected, as they are at the forefront of the EU's borders. Our fundamental role in border protection and the weight of this task must be recognised and shared by the EU, "says the summit's final document.
We need to take the necessary steps to complete monetary and economic union in order to ensure sustainable and balanced growth, "the final text of the summit says. The seven leaders stress that "completing the banking union is a priority". Popular consultations throughout Europe from next spring to hear citizens about the future of the European Union. It is the proposal launched by the leaders of the countries of the South that in the final document of the summit in Rome make their own the proposal of the French president Emmanuel Macron. Yes also to the transnational lists for the European Parliamentelections, convinced that this could "strengthen the democratic dimension of the Union". The leaders of the Med-7 countries "reaffirm their support for a viable agreement in Cyprus that brings together Cyprus and its people, and that guarantees the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus, without the need for guarantees. The Republic of Cyprus is and remains a member of the EU, and being part of the EU is the best guarantee for a reunified Cyprus,"says the final document of the Med-7 Summit in Villa Madama. The next summit of the seven southern European Union countries will take place in Cyprus.

The president of Turkey Recep Tayyp Erdoğan is visiting Rome for a single day: with his wife, daughter and some ministers. He met Pope Francis, President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and some entrepreneurs operating in Turkey. Contrasting evaluations between protests, hopes and exceptional security measures. On the carpet the usual problems: human rights, war with the Kurds contrast to the secularity state and a long list. "A long series of missed opportunities - comments the president of the Fondazione Mediterraneo Michele Capasso, who has had numerous meetings with President Erdoğan since 2005 - that could have affected the process of our history. When President Erdoğan came to Naples at the headquarters of our Foundation in September 2005 (accompanied by many ministers and in the presence of the highest representatives of the European institutions) he asked the Foundation for a quick acceptance of Turkey to the European Union. On that occasion we listed a series of priorities and detailed the things to do: starting from human rights, from women, from the respect of different cultures and others, for a list of 20 points contained in our program "Great Mediterranean" that the same Erdoğan, then, appreciate (watch to the interview at “IL MATTINO”). None of those recommendations was then implemented. At the conclusion of that meeting and in others held in the following years until 2015, we warned President Erdoğan to the risk of an authoritarian drift that could overturn the democratic process and Turkey's accession to the EU. The facts of the last few years have proved us right ".
