At the Trieste Film Festival, with whom the Fondazione Mediterraneo has been collaborating since1995, the 2013 Mediterranean Cinema Award for the best short film was awarded to “Deda” (Waiting for Mum) by Nana Ekvtimishvili. The film focuses on a man’s voice calling his mother and was awarded by a jury of young people.

At a touching ceremony held at the Scuola Media Statale Carlo Poerio in Naples, President Michele Capasso awarded the “2013 Memoriae Mediterranean Award” to Raffaele Arcella, lawyer and concentration camp survivor. The School Headmistress, Daniela Paparella, introduced the ceremony actively involving the more than 300 pupils in the activities organized for the ceremony. Mr Arcella (lawyer) was moved by the ceremony and recalled some of the darkest moments of his internment in Germany. |

With approximately 200 titles, many of which were shown as international and national previews, the Trieste Film Festival has come to be known as the key event for central-east European cinema. Films compete in the full length feature films, short films and documentaries categories, but the festival also includes retrospectives and tributes and it is now a major venue for film lovers who consider it the show case for “New Europe” cinematography.
The Fondazione Mediterraneo has been collaborating with the Trieste Film Festival since1995, where it awards the Mediterranean Cinema Award to the best short film competing.

The traditional meeting with the various Consular Corps of Naples took place at the Naples Chamber of Commerce for the New Year’s exchange of greetings. The event was attended by 68 Consuls of Naples. Michele Capasso and Caterina Arcidacono represented the Fondazione Mediterraneo. |

At two meetings held in Nicosia, 9 November 2012and Naples, 12 December 2012, respectively, the members of the jury of the Fondazione Mediterraneo and those of the jury of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for Dialogue among Cultures awarded the Mediterranean Awards for 2013. The announcement was made by the President of the Fondazione Mediterraneo, Michele Capasso during the traditional Epiphany Concert broadcast by the Italian TV Channel RaiUno, organized by the “Oltre il Chiostro” Association and presented by Fabrizio Gatta. At the XVIIIth edition of the Epiphany Concert held at the Teatro Mediterraneo in Naples on 4January 2013, the Fondazione Mediterraneo awarded the 2013 “Raffaele Capasso” Mediterranean Award for Legality to the Fondazione Antonino Caponnetto. The President of the Fondazione, Salvatore Càlleri, expressed his gratitude for the Award and personal appreciation for the work carried out by the Fondazione Mediterraneo by becoming a member of the project to set up a “Mediterranean Observatory on Mafias and Organized Crime”. |

The “TOTEM FOR PEACE” by the sculptor Mario Molinari will be erected in the City of Brindisi and dedicated to the memory of Melissa Bassi, the young student killed during an attack on the training college, Istituto Professionale per i Servizi Sociali “Morvillo Falcone”, in Brindisi. This agreement was made between President of the Fondazione, Michele Capasso, the “Totem for Peace” Project Manager, Pia Molinari and the Institute Headmistress, Mrs Rosanna Maci. |

A “Mediterranean observatory on Mafias and Organized Crime” will be set up as a result of the initiative taken by the Fondazione Mediterraneo and the Fondazione Caponnetto. This project was proposed by the respective Presidents of the two organizations Michele Capasso and Salvatore Càlleri, which will come into being in the next few months. |

Alessio has been war correspondent in Syria for some time and this award was made in recognition of the images he has circulated of the civil war in Syria. |
