THE FOUNDATION ADHERES TO THE DAY OF FAST AND PRAYER FOR PEACE IN AFRICA

Today, 23 February 2018, the first Friday of Lent, is a Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace, in particular for South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The initiative was launched by Pope Francis during the Angelus on Sunday 4 February 2018.
The Fondazione Mediterraneo with its network has joined the day in the wake of the thirty year activity for dialogue and peace.
The Pope's invitation was welcomed by the World Council of Churches which announced that in the Democratic Republic of the Congo alone, over 4 million people have been displaced and more than 13 million Congolese are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. The same tragic situation in South Sudan where 2 million people have fled the country and many are internally displaced. In the battered African country almost two thirds of the population need humanitarian aid. Card. Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, invited the Secretary General of the World Council of Churches, Pastor Olav Fykse Tveit to attend this Day of Prayer which becomes - he wrote in a letter - "a sign of solidarity and closeness to those who suffer in these nations and especially to the many Christians of different Churches who live there and, moreover, a concrete step in the shared witness of the Gospel of peace, which the world so badly needs ". Pastor Tveit has accepted the invitation he has addressed to the Church members of the Council, reiterating that it is precisely children, young people and women who are the people most affected by the crisis.
The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue also supported the Pope's wish to extend prayer and fasting to the faithful of other religions, living it "according to their own tradition and in their places of worship".
In Italy there has been the adhesion of Islamic religious communities.

THE TURKISH PRESIDENT ERDOGAN MEETS IN ROME THE POPE AND THE PRESIDENTS MATTARELLA AND GENTILONI. THE PRESIDENT CAPASSO COMMENTS A LONG SERIES OF LOST OCCASIONS, FROM THE VISITOF THE TURKIS PRESIDENTTO FONDAZIONE MEDITERRANEO.

The president of Turkey Recep Tayyp Erdoğan is visiting Rome for a single day: with his wife, daughter and some ministers. He met Pope Francis, President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and some entrepreneurs operating in Turkey. Contrasting evaluations between protests, hopes and exceptional security measures. On the carpet the usual problems: human rights, war with the Kurds contrast to the secularity state and a long list. "A long series of missed opportunities - comments the president of the Fondazione Mediterraneo Michele Capasso, who has had numerous meetings with President Erdoğan since 2005 - that could have affected the process of our history. When President Erdoğan came to Naples at the headquarters of our Foundation in September 2005 (accompanied by many ministers and in the presence of the highest representatives of the European institutions) he asked the Foundation for a quick acceptance of Turkey to the European Union. On that occasion we listed a series of priorities and detailed the things to do: starting from human rights, from women, from the respect of different cultures and others, for a list of 20 points contained in our program "Great Mediterranean" that the same Erdoğan, then, appreciate (watch to the interview at “IL MATTINO”). None of those recommendations was then implemented. At the conclusion of that meeting and in others held in the following years until 2015, we warned President Erdoğan to the risk of an authoritarian drift that could overturn the democratic process and Turkey's accession to the EU. The facts of the last few years have proved us right ".
