LIBRARY OF PEACE

The "Library of Peace" is one of the priority actions of the Fondazione Mediterraneo defined in the Statute since its establishment.
The goal is to promote dialogue and mutual respect in the Euro-Mediterranean region and in the world by promoting the reading of texts in various languages ​​and, in particular, in the Arabic language.
The Fondazione Mediterraneo signed in 2003 a permanent agreement with the “Bibliotecha Alexandrina” and the “Library of Algiers” and collaboration protocols with various international institutions, such as the “Al-Babtain Foundation” for the promotion and dissemination of Arabic poetry.
The headquarters of the "Library of Peace" - named after St. John Paul II - is located on the ground, mezzanine, fourth and fifth floors of the former “Grand Hotel de Londres”, where the Fondazione Mediterraneo with the Museum of Oeace - MAMT is located.
Equipped with about 20,000 volumes in various languages, the "Library of Peace" (BIPA) dedicates a section to children with books for children: from the myth of Giufà and the Thousand and One Nights to fairy tales that find unanimous consent and diffusion in various countries.
The "Library of Peace" is open for free to all on the following days:

  • Monday: from 10 to 13am and from 16 to 18pm.
  • Wednesday: from 10 to 13am and from 16 to 18pm.
  • Friday: from 10 to 13am and from 16 to 18pm.

The Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina signed a permanent cooperation agreement to enhance the activities aiming at achieving one of the main objectives pursued through the realization of the so called “Fourth Pyramid”, that is the promotion of the protection and circulation of the book in the Mediterranean area.
Mr. Michele Capasso, president of the Foundation and Mr. Ismail Seragueldin, director of the Library, signed a protocol of permanent cooperation providing, among other things, for:

  • the creation in Naples of the "Library of Peace" with an initial endowment of 10,000 volumes in various languages. The Library will be inaugurated in September 2003 with the presence of President Mubarak and his wife Suzanne Mubarak, president of the Alexandrina Library..
  • lthe holding, every two years, of the Mediterranean Award in Egypt (the first outstanding candidate will be the Nobel Prize-Winner for literature Naguib Mahfouz).
  • the realization of an Encyclopaedia of the Mediterranean, the publishing of books, monographs and reviews in collaboration with the “Mediterranean and Alexandria Research Center”, created at the Library.
  • The organization of a Forum Euromed to discuss the theme “The Mediterranean City: its Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development”.

Access is from Via Depretis, 130 (intercom on the 4th floor).

The "Library of Peace" is open for free to all on the following days:

  • Monday: from 10 to 13am and from 16 to 18pm.
  • Wednesday: from 10 to 13am and from 16 to 18pm.
  • Friday: from 10 to 13am and from 16 to 18pm.

The activities of the “Library of Peace” are aimed at promoting Euro-Mediterranean culture and the world especially towards adolescents and young people.
Numerous meetings with schools, book presentations and events and performances scheduled from October to June each year.

Equipped with about 20,000 volumes in various languages, the "Library of Peace" (BIPA) dedicates a section to children with books for children: from the myth of Giufà and the Thousand and One Nights to fairy tales that find unanimous consent and diffusion in various countries . A special section is dedicated to the city of Naples and Arabic poetry, with a room dedicated to the poet Al-Otaiba.
