52nd WORLD EARTH DAY

The Fondazione Mediterraneo and the Museum of Peace - MAMT celebrated the "52nd World Earth Day" with the theme "INVESTIAMO PER IL PIANETA" (WE INVEST IN THE PLANET) via the web and with numerous initiatives: videoconferences, links, chats and - above all - the sending of 1,000 copies of the book "Questa nostra buona terra" (This good earth of ours) published in 2014 by the Fondazione and written by Sister Maria Pia Giudici, who died on 20.02.2020 on the very day that the coronavirus spread in Italy.
Through high-quality multimedia videos, a gift of the World Heritage Museum, it was possible to take a virtual journey across the five continents, giving voice to the people who daily guard our common home, living and fighting for the protection and recognition of the rights of each people in every corner of the Earth.
In a world that is too often crushed by the European interpretation of the environment and its functions, the commitment of organisations and realities emerges which, by establishing positive relationships with nature, protect the original peoples who have always preserved the lungs of the earth. They fight together with those who daily commit themselves to serving and promoting the conservation of the Amazonian forests or the Congo forest.
Caring for these peoples means caring for the entire ecosystem, the world, our common home.
The interrelationship between the peoples of the earth is clear, the interdependence that makes us protagonists of a common destiny, which depends on the actions of men and women in every corner of the planet. With delicate ferocity, it is current events that reveal to us the subtle but constant link that makes us all part of and creators of the future of our planet.
One people sharing one planet.
The virtual journey of the Museum of Peace - MAMT allows us to listen to those who protect the earth on a daily basis to protect each one of us.
President Michele Capasso retraced the steps of his commitment to the earth: at the age of 16, on 22 April 1970, he took part in the first edition of World Earth Day. For half a century, his commitment has seen him spread the alarm about the conditions of our common home, as evidenced by hundreds of reports and publications.
As a reminder for Sister Maria Pia Giudici below is President Michele Capasso's preface to the volume "Questa nostra buona terra".
On this occasion, "THE APPEAL FOR THE UNITED STATES OF THE WORLD" was presented.

AFTER MORE THAN 20 YEARS, PIAZZA MUNICIPIO REOPENS. PRESIDENT CAPASSO IS MOVED BY THE ALMOST COMPLETED WORK

The Piazza Municipio promenade leading from the port towards Palazzo San Giacomo reopens to the city, freed from the building site.
The last part of Piazza Municipio has reopened to the city after more than 20 years. The area was occupied by building sites for the construction of the "Municipio" station on Line 1 of the Naples underground.
The President of the Fondazione Mediterraneo, Michele Capasso, was moved to tears as he watched the simple ceremony from the balcony of his office overlooking the square and, around 13.30, greeted Gaetano Manfredi, Edoardo Cosenza, Antonio De Jesu, Filippo Cavuoto, Ennio Cascetta and others.
"The day after the Foundation moved into Palazzo Pierce, work began on the Metro Municipio," says Capasso, "almost 22 years ago. Every day I photographed the work, documenting its evolution and complexity. I remember the many meetings with my brotherly friend Alvaro Siza and then the many "sufferings" we had to endure, which limited our activities. But it was worth it: a work of high engineering that gives new meaning to the square. We are working at an international level so that it can take on the role of the Peace Square".
Together with the Museum's director Pia Molinari, Senator Giuseppe Lumia and other members of the International Executive Committee, Capasso goes over the key stages of the work and reports on interviews and meetings with Alvaro Siza.
Mayor Manfredi says: "We will animate this part of the square with a series of cultural initiatives and exhibition activities. Piazza Municipio is one of the most important places in the city, not only from a symbolic point of view, but also because it is one of the most significant transport nodes. With the opening of Line 6, it will become a fundamental junction. Then there will be the connection with which we are approaching the maritime station, and this is another element of connection that brings Naples closer to the sea".
Councillor Cosenza concludes: "The pedestrian area has finally reopened. There are those who have never seen this square without construction sites, as more than 20 years have passed. You can see a square from above and everyone asks: 'Why did it take 20 years to do this?', but in reality there is endless engineering underneath. There are two metro lines, there is the archaeological trail, so let's give credit where credit is due."
